EDBT 2006 - Call for Participation
10th International Conference on Extending Database Technology
March 26-31, 2006, Munich, Germany
Since 1988, each of the nine past editions of EDBT - the International Conference on Extending Database Technology - have attracted hundreds of members of the academic and industrial data management communities to form a top-rank forum for research, exchange, and innovation.
We are calling you to participate in the 10th edition of EDBT which will open on March 26, 2006 in Munich, Germany.
Conference Theme
Ever since its early days, database technology has been challenged and advanced by new uses and applications and has evolved along with application requirements and hardware advances. Today's horizons of the field appear without limits. Technological trends, new computation paradigms, novel applications, sophisticated user interactions, they all require robust and flexible database technology to be deployed in a variety of environments and for several diverse purposes. Peer-to-peer architectures, the Grid, personal information systems, pervasive and ubiquitous computing, networked sensors, biomedical informatics, virtual digital libraries, virtual communities, and trust management are just a small sample of the great challenges ahead of us that drive research and development of the next generation of database technology.
The present environment is a unique opportunity for the field to move away from any narrow interpretation of databases and expand its focus to the hard problems faced by broad visions of data, information, and knowledge management. In this spirit, the banner theme chosen by EDBT 2006 is:
"From Database Systems to Universal Data Management"
Core Conference Program
(March 27-29, 2006)
EDBT 2006 will feature an attractive and compelling mixture of keynote speeches, high-quality research and industrial tracks, hands-on software demonstrations, a panel, and tutorials (no extra fees).
Invited Speakers:
- Martin Kersten (CWI Amsterdam)
- David Maier (OGI)
- Alan Smeaton (U Dublin)
Research Track
The EDBT 2006 research track contains 60 contributions which were judiciously peer-reviewed and selected by an international program committee of 76 members. Among others, the track covers the following topics:
- Spatial, Temporal, and Geographic Databases
- Query Processing and Optimization
- XML and Semistructured Databases
- Data Streams and Publish-Subscribe Systems
- Biological and Medical Databases
- Data Curation, Annotation and Provenance
- User Interfaces and Data Visualization
- Data Preservation
- Privacy and Security
- Trustworthy Databases
The EDBT 2006 Industrial and Applications Track hosts 8 papers on Business Intelligence and Data Processing as well as Database System Enhancements.
In the Software Demonstrations Track, 20 contributions testify that database research has always also been about systems building and experimental study.
The EDBT 2006 conference proceedings will be published in the Springer LNCS series (hard-copy and electronic copy on CD included in registration fee).
Tutorials and Panels
In parallel with the other tracks, EDBT 2006 invites you to participate in five tutorials which cover current as well as emerging thrilling topics in database research. For conference attendees, participation is free of charge.
- Graph Mining Techniques and Their Applications; Sharma Chakravarthy (U Arlington)
- Information Quality for Data Integration; Felix Naumann (HU Berlin), Kai-Uwe Sattler (TU Ilmenau)
- Introduction to Scientific Data and Workflow Management; Bertram Ludäscher (SDSC), Michael Gertz (U Davis)
- Introduction to Text Mining; Rene Witte (U Karlsruhe)
- Location-aware Query Processing; Mohamed F. Mokbel (U Minnesota), Walid G. Aref (Purdue)
Karl Aberer (EPFL) will lead a panel on Data Management in the Social Web.
Collocated Events
There is more to EDBT 2006 than just the core conference itself. EDBT 2006 will be accompanied by nine workshop which will immediately precede and follow the conference:
March 26, 2006:
- EDBT 2006 PhD Workshop
- DataX'06
- Inconsistency and Incompleteness in Databases
- Information Integration in Healthcare Applications (IIHA)
March 30, 2006:
- Query Languages and Query Processing (QLQP)
- Pervasive Information Management (PIM)
- IFIP Conference on Semantics of a Networked World
- Pattern Representation and Management (PaRMa)
March 31, 2006:
- Query Languages and Query Processing (QLQP, cont'd)
- Reactivity on the Web
Selected contributions will be collected to form a separate post-conference Springer LNCS workshop proceedings.
Registration
Please use the online registration form on the EDBT 2006 conference web site (www.edbt2006.de) to register for the conference, the workshops, the truly Bavarian style conference banquet, and to arrange hotel accommodation. Registration fees (including proceedings and tutorials but excluding the conference banquet), are:
